The 2017 Real Property Section Annual Meeting, “Emerging Issues and Recent Developments in Real Estate Law,” takes place in Asheville, NC this week and will concentrate on current topics and updates in real estate law. The program will address issues that may come up in both the commercial and residential sectors and will focus on developments surrounding Medicaid planning, short-term rentals, legal opinions, E- closings and legislation, as well as substance abuse and mental health in the legal profession.

Three of the Firm’s attorneys will speak at the event, bringing experience and knowledge from their practice areas to North Carolina real estate practitioners. Caroline Knox, president of The Van Winkle Law Firm, will discuss ways that real estate practitioners can avoid pitfalls in late-life property transfers. In her practice, Knox advises clients on matters relating to elder law, guardianship, asset preservation, and Medicaid and other public benefits planning.

As part of Saturday’s program, Craig Justus and Esther Manheimer, both principals with the Firm, will join forces to discuss law and policy regarding short-term vacation rental issues from both a zoning and restrictive covenant standpoint. Justus practices in the areas of environmental law, real estate and land-use litigation and planning. He actively represents clients in zoning and annexation matters as well as homeowner association matters, including drafting, reviewing and enforcing restrictive covenant documents.

Manheimer focuses her practice on commercial litigation, land use, and land disputes stemming from encroachments, easements, boundary lines, erosion and title matters. In addition, she provides counsel to help homeowner and property owner association boards enforce restrictions, manage assessments, handle infrastructure issues, and draft and redraft covenants and by-laws.

Lindsay Thompson, principal with the Van Winkle Law Firm and co-planner for the program says, “The annual meeting is a great way for North Carolina real estate practitioners to stay updated on recent developments surrounding real estate law. The program features some of the state’s most talented and experienced attorneys.” Thompson focuses her practice on commercial real estate, land use, and matters involving property owner associations.
